The Story of Jacob's First Trick

Genesis 24:21-34

The day after Beth's birthday, Beth was playing with Tina, her new talking doll. Every time Beth pulled the string, Tina would say, "My name's Talking Tina and I love you very much" or something like that.
While Beth was playing, her brother Bobby ran up and knocked her over. Then he sat on her and said, "Give me Tina or I'm going to hit you really hard." Because Beth didn't want to be hit, she gave her brother the doll.
When Bobby left with the doll, Beth ran to her mother crying. "Mother," she said, "Bobby took Talking Tina!" And she told her mother everything that had happened.
When Beth was done telling the story, her mother sat on the big living room couch and lifted Beth into her lap. "Let me tell you a story that will make you feel better, Dear One," her mother said. And this is the story she told.

One day, there once were twin boys named Esau and Jacob. Esau was a hairy man who hunted for a living, and Jacob was a simple man who lived in a tent.
One day, Esau walked over to Jacob's house in the flat lands. Esau was so tired and hungry that he almost fainted.
When he got there, Esau said to Jacob, "Can I have something to eat? I'm going to faint because I'm so hungry."
"Well," said Jacob, "I'll trade you some food for your birthright." That meant that, when their father died, Jacob would get all of their father's stuff and Esau would get nothing.
"My birthright doesn't do me much good if I starve to death," said Esau.
"Then swear to me," said Jacob. And Esau did.
In return for Esau's birthright, Jacob gave him some bread and lentil soup.

Beth thought about this for a moment. "Did Jacob get punished for tricking his brother like that?" she asked.
"No, Dear One," answered her mother.
Beth thought for another moment. "So I guess that Esau wouldn't have gotten punished if he'd done the same thing back to Jacob, right?"
"I suppose not," answered her mother.
Then Beth smiled and hugged her mother. All her questions had been answered, and she had already begun to plot her revenge.
